SCHDC Announces Ambitious Decarbonization Initiatives and $100,000 Award Under the NYSERDA Empire Building Challenge

Staten Island, June 15th, 2024 — Sisters of Charity Housing Development Corporation is proud to announce its participation in Round Three of the Empire Building Challenge, facilitated by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). As part of this innovative initiative, Sisters of Charity will focus on transforming its Staten Island properties into low-carbon models of efficiency, commencing with the senior housing building located at 150 Brielle Ave.

This prestigious inclusion follows a competitive selection process that highlights Sisters of Charity’s commitment to sustainability and excellence in affordable housing. The organization and its esteemed partners, including KOW Building Consultants, Purpose by Design Architects, and Ettinger Engineering, will receive $100,000 to develop a comprehensive decarbonization roadmap for the Staten Island property. This project will serve as a cornerstone of Sisters of Charity’s pledge to reduce fossil fuel use by 100% at the property and an additional 10% reduction across all its Staten Island properties by 2035, enhancing the living conditions of its 451 units.

Doreen M. Harris, President and CEO, NYSERDA said, “As we press toward New York’s ambitious Climate Act goals, projects like Sisters of Charity Housing demonstrate how forward-thinking approaches can help us reduce emissions from buildings while providing safe and healthy housing to our state’s most vulnerable residents. NYSERDA is pleased to select this project as an awardee of the Empire Building Challenge Round Three and we look forward to watching this come to life to provide more affordable energy-efficient living spaces to the Staten Island community.”

This effort is part of a broader strategy to address climate change and improve the quality of life in disadvantaged communities. The Empire Building Challenge represents a significant commitment from New York State’s energy sector to innovate high-quality, low-carbon housing solutions. Sisters of Charity Housing Development Corporation is honored to contribute to this vital work, demonstrating feasible and replicable low carbon retrofit solutions that align with New York State’s ambitious energy goals.
